It Takes a Riot (Documentary film)

Industry: Film Documentary
Discipline: Directing  |  Film Production  |  Writing  |  Art Direction

This short film was done in conjunction with McGill college in Toronto. The ask was to create a piece that summed up the 15th anniversary of an uprising that happened in Toronto. This event was crucial in Toronto’s history because of the sweeping changes and funding policies that happened in its aftermath. These changes affected everything from the policing policies to the rise in the diverse art scene of Toronto.

We decided to weave the story of BADC, a social activist group that preceded the BLM movement and the events that lead to the uprising. It was a huge effort of research, planning, and international production but the biggest obstacle was earning the trust of the activists that we interviewed. In general, because many activists are looked at as threats to big institutions, they are monitored, harassed and sometimes physically targeted for their work. It took a strong connection to get them to open up about their actions and the events that lead to that night.

The result was mass coverage in Toronto media a huge spike in social engagement for McGill University and its historical department. Television interviews for the screening and a great reception for the film including calls to have it archived and placed in film festivals. With all of these accolades, Personally, having Chuck D, of Public Enemy cosign the film was a huge win for our team.

Recently, with more focus on social issues, the short film has had another resurgence with over 20 outlets asking to create screenings in online or in outdoor forums.
